I recently had the pleasure of taking a client on a New York shopping trip to explore private showrooms and select retailers. There’s something truly special about being able to shop with a client in person. It gives us the chance to really fine-tune their style and make sure it aligns perfectly with their professional and personal goals.
On this particular trip, my mission was to find high-quality staples for my client who has an amazing arty-bohemian look. She already owns a collection of unique pieces. What she needed were those essential basics that tie everything together.
So, I set out to find the best brands for her body type. I focused on finding brands that offer high-quality pants and shirts that work well for layering under jackets and blazers, as well as simple skirts that offer understated elegance. To ensure a seamless experience, I visited retailers beforehand and handpicked pieces that would compliment her wardrobe.
I’m a huge proponent of building your personal brand around what you already have in your closet. Staple pieces like a classic pair of dark jeans, a perfectly tailored blazer, or flattering black pants help to create a capsule collection that anchors your wardrobe and pulls an outfit together effortlessly.
SHOPPING TRIP PREP
Before our trip, I spent some time in my client’s closet, having her try on clothes that she not only loved but wanted to wear more often.
I quickly noticed a wardrobe gap: a lack of essential basics that would complement statement pieces like blazers with intricate embellishments or jackets adorned with hanging ribbons. My client was missing foundational items like basic tees, versatile pants and footwear, as well as handbags that would complete her looks. Staples are key when it comes to adding the finishing touches to any look and enhancing your overall wardrobe.
After trying on various dresses and jackets, it was clear we needed to find the right pants, a stylish skirt to match tops or blazers, and a layering shirt that would work well under a stylish jacket.
With this in mind, I chose showrooms and retailers where she could try on clothes and fully envision how these pieces would integrate with outfits we had styled at her home.
Understanding her existing wardrobe, her preferences, and above all, the impression she aspires to create through her appearance, we carefully selected which retailers to shop.
WHERE WE SHOPPED
During our first shopping trip together, we had a fantastic experience and found great success at MM.LaFleur, Charlotte Brody, Frances Valentine, Bergdorf Goodman, and Gucci.
Each store had a variety of silhouettes in tops, blazers, pants, and skirts that will complement her wardrobe and help her wear her most loved items in different ways. Gucci offered beautiful accessories and a classic loafer that will be worn for years to come.
One of the most rewarding parts of this New York shopping trip was seeing the confidence and joy my client gained trying on new pieces that fit into her personal style. It was incredible to watch her light up as she tried on new pieces, realizing that a capsule collection was all she was missing form her wardrobe.
Stay tuned for more on our shopping trip, as we take a closer look at the specific clothing pieces that contributed to my clients newfound sense of style.
