A new classic returns and goes beyond the workplace.
Everyone owns one, two or three, and they’ve been a staple for years. Now, many tried and true brands at every price point have updated the classic white button-ups that we have all relied on as anchor pieces that go with just about everything.
This year, there is a wide array of white collared shirts that are anything but uniform, yet they still have utility in any wardrobe. A century ago, the white shirt symbolized a pristine appearance. The “Oxford” shirt with an essential and basic status came next, as a wardrobe item that easily paired with more trendy pieces.

My most vivid memory of how elevated the white shirt has become is from my days at Vogue, when I would occasionally get to visit the fashion closet. As the editors prepared for the 100th anniversary of Vogue, I had the pleasure of perusing and finding every type of white shirt. For this 100th issue, Vogue shot all the supermodels in Gap white button-down shirts in multiple styles. The white button-down is one of the few styles that can work for every shape, size, and ethnicity.
